MY DENTAL EXPERIENCE AT KHOO TECK PUAT HOSPITAL

How the hospital looks like!

Hey. So this is my first post on my blog! Well, recently, I did my dental operation. So I guess it would be great to share with you my experience!

Let's start from the beginning when I went to my private dentist for consultation. Well, I was kind of excited. So, I did all X-ray of my teeth. What upset me was that, I have to go for a dental operation. That moment, I was really really terrified, because I did not have an operation done before..YES, in my entire life!

I have to pluck out 2 wisdom teeth and 1 tooth that is either UNDERNEATH or ABOVE my two MAIN TEETH. Yes, MAINN!! (I know it sounds complicated, hahaha) Those 3 I have to do an operation by drilling for the lower wisdom teeth and "cutting" the tooth which is neither underneath or above my main teeth. Well, for the "cutting" one, is not really like "cutting" but in Chinese, we call it “开刀".(P.S: My Chinese is better than my English)

Well, in together I have to pluck out 5 teeth. So what is the surgeon doing to my other 2 teeth? Well, they are "normal" teeth which are not hidden. Hence, it is just normal extraction.

Okay, let's move on to my visit to the dental hospital that I went to do my operation.                       KHOO TECK PUAT HOSPITAL. I'm very happy with the way they served me, let me tell you in just a bit. Firstly, I went for another dental consultation with my surgeon                             Dr Tay Pek Lian Sylvia. I didn't know that she had good comments by her patients. So, I guess I was lucky to have her as my surgeon (I heard from one lady who did her operation of her wisdom teeth before me.) After selecting my date of operation, which was 5 November 2013. I kind of liked the date because I'm plucking out 5 teeth so it's 5 November 2013. Haha.

But Dr Tay only had dental operation on Tuesdays. But sadly, I can't book in the morning because it is only for those who had major operation. Actually, I thought mine was major though because of the number of teeth I have to pluck(At the same time, I was relieved that mine was minor. Funny me)

Time passed very fast. 1 more week left... 3 more days... And it's tomorrow! Okay, that was a flashback. The nurse called my mum saying that I can't have food and drink after 12 midnight. Wow, this is my first time not having food and water for like... more than half a day? Yeah, but I succeed! *Weeee...YAYY* But to be honest, when I woke up, my stomach kind of growled (maybe because the food is digesting slowly) But in the middle, I kind of had difficulties controlling it. So I went to sleep. I really admire (Chinese we call it: 佩服. Not the meaning of liking someone) my Malay friends who fast before their Hari Raya. They can even have no food and drinks for about more than half a day without like sleeping, but just doing their daily basis.

I reached the hospital kind of early, about 12.30pm I guess? Well, because we came too early, we have to wait about like an hour after my time of operation which is 2.30pm. I wasn't that nervous when I got into the operating theater. I was trembling.. shaking.. My whole body was like shaking. What's the most painful was the needle poking into my vein. Oh my gosh, it's like pain but endurable. The anaesthetist "bit" my vein and rub something onto my vein. I thought they already put the needle inside. Turns out that he was just waking my veins up. The needle poke through my skin. Ouch.. It was painful! (But just a few seconds)

The surgeon gave me a General Anaesthesia which they put me in a deep sleep while they operate my teeth. I fell asleep in a few minutes when they poked the needle through and gave me a mask for me to breathe in the air into my nose. I really did not feel anything. But I kind of woke up after my operation. It wasn't that pain but just numb on my cheeks and mouth. I can't feel any single thing. It was kind of tiring though. Enduring the pain and stuffs like that. But now, at least it didn't feel numb. Just my teeth, I have to open my mouth. I can't close it. My jaws hurt... But overall, the nurses were very friendly. And even help me to wipe my tears using tissue. Yeah, I kind of cried when I woke up. LOL.

Last and for most, I would like to thank my Surgeon, Dr Tay Pek Lian Sylvia for helping me operate my teeth and making it such a successful operation. And as well as my Anaesthetist(I guess he's a Doctor?) Dr Bin Wern Hsien. Thank you all that served me welly, I'm very proud that I choosed the right Dental Hospital to operate my teeth. THANK YOU!! <3

  1. Hi! I have to go for wisdom teeth surgery too. How long is the waiting list for the surgery? And most importantly, may I know how much the surgery cost you and if you went for private or subsidised? :)

  4. Hi Geraldine, can i ask whether your wisdom tooth extraction surgery @ KTPH is actually referred by your braces doctor?
By the way the cost of $1,500 is it fully paid by MediSave or just partial?
    Thanks in advance. :)

  6. Hi. May i know in your opinion, is it better to get a referral letter from polyclinics or just book an appointment straight with the hospital? Cause i was planning on just going straight to KTPH. But i myself is unsure of the consultation fees, etc. Just asking though, in your opinion and also, any advices from you? It will help alot. Thanks in advance (:

  7. Wisdom teeth surgery is painful surgery but today dentist give you a general anesthetic for a painless surgery. If you have any infections so surgery will usually be delayed until the infection has cleared up. This blog also offers valuable information about dental surgery.

  8. Hi may I know how long did you have to wait to do the surgery after you had your consultation? And do you think it will be faster if I book directly with the hospital instead of getting a referral from polyclinic? Thanks for your help! :)

  9. That was a very informative and helpful post for people who might have their wisdom teeth extracted. Yes, it is a scary, and often bloody, procedure, but the results are quite satisfying later on. Imagine the consequences of not having your wisdom teeth pulled out, especially if they’re not pushing out the right way. Not that great of a feeling, right? You were very brave to push through with it quite nicely, and able to blog about it afterwards. Cheers!
